Article: A DESIGNER TO WATCH
A DESIGNER TO WATCH
We have been loving the Nigerian label SULTANA led by Samira Mohammed. We ask Samira, the founder of SULTANA, questions about her brand, what inspires her and how she handles the challenges that comes with owning a brand
My journey into fashion began in my mother’s tailoring shop, where I first fell in love with fabrics, colours, and the art of creating something meaningful from scratch. Even after earning a business degree, that early passion stayed with me and eventually led me to pursue formal fashion courses, competitions, and ultimately the courage to build my own brand.

A typical day in my life as a designer is a blend of creativity and structure. My mornings usually start with planning and managing key tasks, followed by client meetings and a review of ongoing production. I try to reserve a part of each day for research—whether that’s exploring new techniques, documenting ideas, or refining my brand direction. It’s a rhythm that keeps me grounded while allowing my creativity to evolve.
My inspiration comes from many places, but my roots remain my biggest influence. I’m deeply driven by representation and the belief that fashion can be both expressive and responsible. Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us—it’s woven into our process. We work closely with local textile producers, dyers, and artisans, not only to preserve craftsmanship but to ensure our pieces embody comfort, authenticity, and self-expression. I want wearers to feel free, comfortable, and connected to their authentic selves.
Growing the brand hasn’t been without challenges. Sourcing materials and funding have tested us, but a stronger focus on local production and disciplined financial planning has helped create stability and sharpen our identity. One of the defining moments of my career was winning the Vlisco Fashion Fund in 2019, which greatly boosted my creative confidence.
Being part of the Onụli platform has also been a meaningful milestone. Onụli has expanded our visibility and market reach, but what truly stands out is the genuine support and respect they show fashionpreneurs. They have a great deal of respect for fashionpreneurs in how they interact, and I have immense admiration for the founder, the team, and the vision they are building. Truly, truly, stay tuned on ONỤLI!
Looking ahead, we’re investing even more in local artisans, refining our brand identity, and working closely with Onụli on new collaborations. I’m excited for what’s to come—growth rooted in community, craftsmanship, and creativity.
